Adams, WA and twice to rim of Mt. St. Helens, WA. These boots have not let me down. Great traction in rock or scree, lacing system works well, Gore-Tex keeps my feet dry, excellent ankle support, soles are stiff enough to be effective with crampons on steep slopes yet forgiving enough to be comfortable on a long approach. I use Black Diamond Contact universal crampons, and they fit these boots just fine (a little tight in the heel of the crampon but no problems). Minimal to no break-in needed; my feet felt good and no blisters even after 12 hour single-day climbs of Mt. Adams and St. Helens. If your feet are a bit wide, these boots have the volume in the toe-box you need with thick trekking socks. Construction, materials, and overall fit of the boot are outstanding (these boots are made in Italy). Bare in mind that i have about 25+years of tromping around the woods, hills, and other wild places and I worked in outdoor retail for 4years many moons ago. So, the Scarpa Escape GTX, what about it? Out of the box the boot is relatively light with a good amount of stiffness and little torsional flex. The vibram sole has an aggressive lug pattern bonded to an EVA midsole of variable densities. i like the rand very much and on inspection it seems that it will protect the leather upper nicely from abrasion or laceration while supporting it and minimizing lateral stretching. It looks to be well suited for minimizing water intrsusion as well. The uppers are of what is called a Crosta leather upper. I have no prior experience with this finish though it seems up to the task on first imppression. It has a fine suede or nubuck feel to it.
